Key Takeaways
- Getting up off the floor without your hands is a sign of good health and mobility.
- Quad and core strength tend to weaken with age and inactivity.
- If you can't do it yet, it's fixable with the right help and practice.
There was a time in all our lives when we could get up off the floor without using our hands or pushing on our thighs. In this video, Dr. Parsons, joined by Rachel and Shauna, explains why that ability matters and why it's worth testing yourself.
Why It Matters
As we age and become less mobile, our quad strength and core strength weaken. Dr. Parsons says she's heard countless stories of people who fell while alone, couldn't get off the floor, and stayed there until someone found them.
Try It Yourself
Get down on the floor and try to stand back up without using your hands or pushing on your thighs. Being able to do it is a sign of health.
It's Fixable
If you can't do it yet, there's good news. Dr. Parsons shares that a close friend couldn't get off the floor after watching an earlier version of this video, worked at it, and now can. If you're having trouble, get checked to find out where the issues are.
Balance matters too. Try Dr. Parsons' toothbrushing balance exercise, or learn more about our chiropractic care.

Hey everyone, it's Dr. Mikell Suzanne Parsons, with Rachel and Shauna, and we're talking about something that everyone needs to be able to do. There was a time in our lives when we were all able to do it, and that is getting up off the floor without the use of our hands or pushing up on our thighs. The reason is that as we age and get less mobile, our quad strength weakens and our core weakens. And if you fall and you're alone... I cannot tell you how many stories I've heard of people struggling who can't get off the floor, and they're down until someone comes and finds them. So get on the floor and give it a go. Last year, my bestie saw this video that I shot, and she wasn't able to get off the floor. I talked to her last night, and she can now, because she worked at it. Don't be stuck on the floor. If you're having trouble, go see someone. Find out where the areas of issue are, because that's a sign of health, first of all, and it's all fixable. So fix it, and try not to fall. Let's start with that. Talk to you soon.
