We often associate toxins with dangerous chemicals, hazardous materials, and polluted environments. I want to show you some very surprising sources of hidden toxins that are lurking in your everyday life.

I’ve talked about various sources of toxins, including cellular waste, medications, environmental pollutants, and bacterial endotoxins in other blog posts but today, let me show you two commonly overlooked sources of toxins in your daily life.

The Trouble with Plastic Water Bottles

First, let’s talk about plastic water bottles. Not all of them are the same. Those new bottles that are so soft that the water gushes out when you open them? They are usually made of PET, polyethylene terephthalate. Wait, phthalates? Some have been classified as potential carcinogens.

So these plastic water bottles are not good, especially in hot areas like Fresno and the valley. Heat makes these bottles release their chemicals into the water. If you use them, be very careful not to store them in the garage or leave a bottle in your car for emergencies. It’s been cooking up those chemicals all summer!

I avoid using these bottles and especially recommend avoiding them for children during sports events. I’ll use bottled water only as a last resort when traveling or when there are no other options. Instead, invest in reusable glass bottles or stainless steel cups and wash and sterilize them frequently. You’ll save a lot of money and keep plastic out of the trash as a bonus!

The Danger of Styrofoam Cups

Would you be surprised that there’s a similar concern with styrofoam cups? When you use them for hot drinks like coffee, they can release toxins too. Fortunately, most coffee shops have switched to paperboard cups which are lined with polyethylene. They say it doesn’t leach chemicals into food, but could leach it into the environment…hmm.

If you drink from these cups, don’t reuse them and don’t let your coffee keep warm in the car. Transfer them into your travel mug. If you go to PTA meetings, church potlucks, or other events with coffee served in styrofoam, bring your travel mug or skip the coffee altogether. It’s usually yucky!

How to Make Safer Choices

It seems like we’re powerless in a world full of toxins, but we have the power to make safer choices and reduce our exposure. Simple actions like using your own water bottle is even trendy.

Make bringing your own cup to coffee shops and transferring hot drinks to your mug a trend too. Who cares if it looks funny? Tell them it’s your lucky mug!
