Let’s talk about something in our heads that is very chill – alpha brainwaves! They’re like the secret sauce in our brains that help us relax, be creative, learn and remember. We often enter into an alpha state before falling asleep. Sounds wonderful, right? But if we have too much or too little at the wrong time, we feel anything but chill.
Imagine your brain is a car engine, and alpha brainwaves are like sitting in idle. If it’s too low, the engine struggles and sputters. If it’s idling too high, the engine uses too much fuel and it suffers wear and tear.
Alpha brainwaves are like the brain’s engine. When they’re working well, we can handle all sorts of tasks without even thinking about it. Driving, singing along to our favorite songs, reading street signs, and having a relaxed conversation… sometimes all at once! It’s like our brain is alert but also on autopilot.
But when alpha brainwaves aren’t doing their job, it’s like the engine is sputtering out. This can lead to mental fatigue, which can make us think we’re physically tired too. If alpha brainwaves are off, we can end up feeling tired in both our mind and body, which isn’t fun.
Low alpha brainwaves can make conversations a bit tricky. It’s like our brain is slow to catch up, and we struggle to come up with things to say. When alpha brainwaves are too active, we can be so chill that we’re not motivated to do anything. It’s like these busy brainwaves put a roadblock in front of anything that gets us out of that state.
