A Legal form of Danger

Everywhere You Look—Candy is Waiting!

It's EVERYWHERE! Bags and bags of candy line the shelves in every store. The only way to avoid it is to stay home, turn off your TV, and log off social media.

And the craziest part? Candy is not only legal—it's promoted everywhere.

But here's the real issue: much of that candy is loaded with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), one of the most harmful sweeteners—especially for kids.

What is High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)?

Back in the 1970s, manufacturers discovered that HFCS was cheaper to make than table sugar and about 20 times sweeter. For candy companies, this meant bigger profits.

But for our health? Not so sweet. Experts often call HFCS a "non-food" because it contains no vitamins, minerals, or enzymes. That means your body has to use up its own micronutrients just to digest it.

Children who already eat diets heavy in fast food, soda, and pasta often lack proper nutrients. Add HFCS-filled candy, and the damage worsens—possibly even setting the stage for diseases like osteoporosis later in life.

Why HFCS is Harmful for Kids and Adults

Here's what makes HFCS especially dangerous:

  • Easier Fat Conversion: Fructose converts to fat more efficiently than glucose.
  • Higher Triglycerides: Can raise triglyceride levels, increasing the risk of cardiovascular problems.
  • Messed-Up Appetite Signals: HFCS doesn't stimulate insulin or leptin, the hormones that tell your brain when to stop eating. Translation: kids (and adults) keep snacking without feeling full.

The result? Increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and long-term health problems.

The Good News: Fruit-Based Sweetness

Unlike HFCS, fruit sugars don't cause the same havoc in your body. That's why swapping out candy for fruit-based treats is a healthier option.

This Halloween, try the "Goblin Trade":

  • Let your little ghosts and goblins pick 5 of their favorite candies.
  • The rest goes to the "Halloween Goblin," who swaps it for a fun toy or special surprise.

(And parents—resist sneaking into the stash yourself. Your kids need healthy role models!)

Healthy Halloween Treat Idea: Bliss Balls

Here's a quick and delicious recipe to satisfy sweet cravings without HFCS.

4-Ingredient Bliss Balls

Final Thoughts

We're entering the season of sugar overload. But this year, you can make healthier choices for your family. By reducing HFCS-laden candy and introducing wholesome, fruit-based alternatives, you'll not only feel better— but you'll also teach your kids lasting habits for a healthier life.

Let's end the year healthier, lighter, and full of energy!
